🍵 Chinese Tea Art Experiences & Workshops

Discover the Depth, Ritual, and Revival of Chinese Tea Arts

Hibiscus Academy offers immersive experiential sessions and hands-on workshops in the traditional and evolving art of Chinese tea. Whether you seek graceful observation or wish to brew and serve tea yourself, our sessions are thoughtfully curated to suit both individuals and groups.

🫖 Tea Types and Brewing Techniques

In our sessions, participants are introduced to the major categories of Chinese tea, each with its own aroma, temperature, brewing time, and method:

  • Green Tea (綠茶) – Delicate, grassy, refreshing; brewed at lower temperatures

  • White Tea (白茶) – Subtle, sweet, and light; minimal processing

  • Yellow Tea (黃茶) – Rare, mild, with a gentle fermentation process

  • Oolong Tea (烏龍茶) – Floral or roasted notes with multiple infusions

  • Fermented Tea (後發酵茶) – Deep, earthy flavors, including Pu'er

Workshops include instruction in water temperature control, infusion timing, aroma appreciation, and proper handling of teaware.

🍃 Nanyang Kungfu Tea Art

We also teach and perform Nanyang-style Kungfu Tea Art, a unique cultural hybrid that evolved in Southeast Asia's Chinese communities, particularly among Hokkien, Teochew, and Cantonese immigrants in Malaysia and Singapore.

  • Rooted in the traditions of southern China, but adapted to local climates and lifestyles

  • Tea is often poured using long-spouted kettles, sometimes with performative movements

  • Commonly featured in local celebrations, kopitiams, and family rituals

  • Combines grace, practicality, and social warmth

This style is part of the living heritage of the Chinese diaspora in Malaysia and expresses both cultural preservation and Southeast Asian flair.

🥣 Song Dynasty Mocha Style (點茶法)

The Origin of Japanese Matcha

Our academy also offers Song Dynasty Mocha-style tea sessions, known in Chinese as 點茶 (diǎn chá).

  • Practiced during the Song Dynasty (960–1279), it involved grinding tea into fine powder, whisking it with hot water in a bowl, and judging the foam produced

  • The process included elegant tea competitions, poetry, and aesthetic appreciation

  • This method was transmitted to Japan by Zen monks, where it evolved into Japanese matcha culture

By reviving this ancient Chinese tradition, participants rediscover the artistic and meditative roots of matcha and gain a deeper understanding of East Asia’s shared tea legacy.

Japanese tea art experiences and workshop

🍃 Whispers of Steam, Echoes of Silence

Introduction

Step into the tranquil world of Japanese tea with our refined experiential sessions and hands-on workshops. Whether you wish to offer your guests a calming tea moment or guide them through the art of tea preparation, we bring the spirit of Japan to your event—or welcome you to ours.

Our sessions are available in two formats, for both large-scale and small-scale events:

  • Experiential Session
Guests observe a refined tea preparation and are served a freshly made cup. This is ideal for shopping malls, corporate launches, and public events where time and flow matter. No hands-on activity is involved. Matcha is preferred for its vibrant color, rich taste, and visual appeal.

  • Workshop Session
Guests learn how to prepare Japanese tea themselves in a simplified and guided way.

    • For large-scale workshops, sencha is preferred, as it is easier to learn and safer to manage in group settings. Preparing matcha correctly requires hours of individual training.

    • For small-group workshops, we offer both matcha and sencha, depending on the depth and experience you wish to provide.

These offerings require skilled presenters, ceremonial tools, and premium-grade ingredients. We do not use supermarket-grade tea. Pricing reflects the depth of care, materials, and authenticity involved.

Sessions can take place at Hibiscus Academy (Kuala Lumpur) or your requested venue. Please book at least 21 calendar days in advance. Sessions are confirmed only upon full payment.

What is Sencha?
Sencha is Japan’s most commonly consumed green tea. It is made by steeping whole tea leaves in hot water. The flavor is light, fresh, and slightly grassy, with a gentle astringency. Sencha is enjoyed daily in Japanese homes and is often used in casual tea settings. It is easy to prepare and ideal for learning.

What is Matcha?
Matcha is a finely ground powder made from shade-grown green tea leaves, traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies. It is whisked with hot water using a bamboo whisk (chasen) to produce a frothy, vibrant green tea with a rich umami flavor. Matcha is considered more ceremonial and requires specific tools and skill to prepare properly.
