Atelier Pino e Luna (松月絲竹社) draws its inspiration from You Meng Ying (幽夢影):
“Listening to the qin beneath the pine; listening to the xiao under the moon; listening to waterfalls by the stream; listening to chanting in the mountains—each reveals a different realm to the ear.”
“Pine” and “moon” embody the refined stillness and contemplative spirit of classical East Asian aesthetics, where listening is not merely auditory, but a state of inner awareness. The imagery suggests a music that is understated yet profound—one that does not seek to impress, but to resonate deeply. This reflects the essence of a high classical tradition: elegant, restrained, and rooted in the harmony between nature and the human spirit.
The term “Si Zhu” (絲竹), literally “silk and bamboo,” traditionally refers to string and wind instruments—the foundation of classical Chinese music. Beyond instrumentation, it represents a broader aesthetic: subtle, balanced, and richly expressive. The blending of silk strings and bamboo pipes evokes a sound world that is intimate and cultivated, closely aligned with the literati ideal of refinement and inner cultivation. In pairing “Song Yue” with “Si Zhu,” the name evokes not only music, but an entire cultural sensibility—where sound, nature, and character are deeply intertwined.
Guided by this philosophy, Song Yue Si Zhu She is dedicated to the education and promotion of East Asian and Malaysian musical traditions. Through teaching and performance, we aim to make these refined art forms more accessible and better understood. We offer learning in a range of si zhu instruments, including the guqin (yaoqin), guzheng, xiao, dizi, erhu, and sanxian—continuing a living tradition of sound that carries both cultural depth and timeless elegance.

The art of the guqin was inscribed by UNESCO in 2003 as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity (later incorporated into the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity). It was recognised not only as a musical tradition, but as a profound cultural practice embodying the intellectual, philosophical, and aesthetic values of the Chinese literati. Guqin music emphasises subtle expression, inner cultivation, and the integration of music with poetry, calligraphy, and personal refinement. UNESCO acknowledged its exceptional historical significance and cultural depth, as well as the need to safeguard and transmit this refined tradition in the modern world.
