A branch of plum blossoms can express hope for a new beginning. A peony can carry wishes for prosperity. A pair of handwritten spring couplets can turn a familiar New Year greeting into something personal.

This October, Hibiscus Academy invites you to explore these traditions through Chinese painting and calligraphy classes in Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown. Set aside two hours each week to practise brushwork, discover colour and composition, and bring cultural learning into everyday life.

🌺 Our October–December 2026 term offers five themes taught by four teachers. Choose the painting style or calligraphy script that interests you, and begin creating work with your own hands.

🖌️ Lingnan Painting｜Tradition with a Fresh View of Nature

Originating in Guangdong, southern China, the modern Lingnan School combines traditional Chinese brushwork with outside influences. It emphasises observation, colour and vitality, offering an expressive approach to depicting the natural world.

In “Introduction to Lingnan Painting”, Mr Kok guides learners in exploring the possibilities of brushwork and colour within this tradition.

🖋️ Clerical Script Calligraphy｜Discover the Rhythm of the Brush

Clerical script is known for its broad forms, distinctive strokes and classical character. Its beauty lies both in the shape of each character and in the rhythm that connects its strokes.

“Introduction to Clerical Script Calligraphy”, taught by Mr Ch'ng, offers an opportunity to explore this script through attention to brush movement, balance and form.

🌸 Plum Blossom Painting & Calligraphy｜Paint Hope for the New Year

Plum blossoms flower in the cold and are associated with resilience and hope. As a subject for New Year painting, they express the promise of renewal.

Ms Ivy Lee’s “Plum Blossom Painting & Calligraphy” brings image and writing together, inviting learners to express seasonal wishes through both brushwork and words.

With their full blooms and rich colours, peonies are traditional symbols of prosperity and honour. The expression 花開富貴—“may blooming flowers bring prosperity”—captures their significance in festive art.

Mr Yee’s “Peony Painting” invites learners to explore this subject and create colourful works that carry their wishes for the coming year.
