🍵 The Story of Matcha – 抹茶 (matcha)

Matcha (抹茶 [matcha] – powdered green tea) is more than just a drink in Japan. It is a ritual, a philosophy, and a symbol of harmony and respect. The tea is made by whisking finely ground green tea powder with hot water using a 茶筅 (chasen – bamboo whisk), creating a smooth and foamy beverage.
In a traditional 茶道 (sadō – the Way of Tea), the host prepares matcha with careful movements and a calm mind. Every item has a meaning: the 茶碗 (chawan – tea bowl), the 茶杓 (chashaku – tea scoop), and the chasen are all arranged in a harmonious flow.
The experience is about more than taste. It is a moment of stillness, mindfulness, and seasonal appreciation – known in Japanese as 侘寂 (wabi-sabi – the beauty of imperfection and impermanence). Whether served in a quiet tatami room or at a modern tea counter, matcha connects people through centuries of tradition.
